Introducing the CII

The UCSD Clinical Investigation Institute (CII) integrates disease-oriented research with fundamental biology, biotechnology, and physician-scientist training. The Institute focuses on three goals:

  1. Facilitating the translation of fundamental biology into novel therapies, with an emphasis on proof-of-concept clinical trials that use novel biomarker and imaging endpoints.
  2. Promoting research into the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, genetics, epidemiology, and natural history of disease
  3. Providing education and training opportunities in clinical investigation

Because of it strong scientific foundation, the UCSD School of Medicine is utilizing its expertise in translational research, especially proof-of-concept studies using biomarker or imaging assessments rather than traditional clinical endpoints. This approach leverages the talents of the UCSD faculty and provides opportunities to streamline drug development. The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences plays a critical role by expanding these investigative efforts to include careful evaluation of pharmacogenomics as well as the biological effects of treatment. Using this model, UCSD is well positioned to be a leader in the development of aggressive, innovative treatments that will have an impact on our patients.
